Need some support after getting fat shamed by a mid-wife.
I am 15 weeks pregnant, 5'0" and currently weighing in at 193lbs. My starting weight was about 175lbs. I just had an appointment today and got a lecture from the mid-wife that I should only be eating an extra 500 calories a day and being pregnant doesn't mean I should be eating times 2. She started the conversation about nutrition - pointing out that I should not be eating alot of carbohydrates, and should focus on just protein and vegetables/fruits. Due to my rising BMI, she said I was obese (yes I already knew this) and putting myself and baby in danger of gestational diabetes. She also went to add that I may even be insulin resistant and not know it.
I was flabbergasted by her lecture. I told her that I heard/read those facts and that I am trying to watch my diet. I only have carbs with one meal - most of my meals are accompaniedby veggies and I am snacking on fruits, nuts, and yogurt. I let myself have dessert only 1x a week. I try to walk every day as my form of exercise as thats the only thing I can tolerate right now. Also, my bloodwork from earlier this year showed my A1C was normal. The only elevated levels were my triglycerides and LDL. My GP said I was fine where I was at despite my weight and BMI.
The mid-wife looked at me like I lied and just told me to better watch my diet and exercise regularly.
My interaction with her gave me a bad feeling and made me self conscious for the rest of the day. All I can see/feel is that my stomach is growing too large and my double chin is taking over my face/neck.
I've always been on the heavier end since I was younger. Throughout my youth, I was always 10lbs heavier than I should be. I know it sounds like an excuse but my body has always tended to the heavier side. I crash dieted in my 20s and only got as low as 150lbs. Previously, I walked on the treadmill, used an elliptical, did yoga and pilates regularly. I can't really run b/c of hip and leg length issues.
I am conscious about my body and the weight gain during pregnancy. I fear comments from my own mother and mother-in-law; both of whom have made comments about my body in the past. I dont know where I am going with this post but just wanted some encouragement and support.
Also, I'm open to any healthy suggestions for food and exercise.
