Rooster is one of those shows that looks like it’s gonna be a chill “awkward dad on campus” comedy, and then it hits you with real feelings when you’re not ready. Steve Carell plays this writer who’s trying to be closer to his daughter, and the whole setup gives cozy fall semester vibes coffee, messy relationships, everyone pretending they’re fine. It’s funny, but it’s not trying to be nonstop jokes… it’s more like funny because people are uncomfortable and life is complicated.

The good: the cast is strong and the show feels grounded. Carell is really good at playing someone who’s likable but also kind of a mess, and the daughter storyline actually matters instead of being background noise. The writing has moments that feel painfully real like conversations where nobody says what they mean until they accidentally do. The bad: the pacing can be uneven, and sometimes it doesn’t know if it wants to be a comedy or a drama, so you’ll get a heavier scene and then a quick joke right after that feels a little whiplashy. Also, if you want big plot twists, this isn’t that..it’s more “emotional slow burn.”

Overall, it’s a solid watch if you like character-driven shows where the humor comes from truth, not punchlines. It’s warm, messy, and occasionally kind of sad in a way that feels honest. If you’re into “people figuring out adulthood late” stories, you’ll probably get hooked just don’t go in expecting it to be The Office style comedy the whole time.
