People saying “A” when it’s meant to be “AN”

Why the hell is it so common? do people not realise how childish they sound saying something like “i’ve got a appointment” they sound like toddlers. How has literacy become this bad when you’ve got a device in your hand that will literally autocorrect words/sentences for you?
