Advice for my son?

My son has never worked on cars before, and I know nothing about them. But some friends of his are working on fixing up an old bus, and they want him to drain the transmission fluid. I am wondering what precautions he should be aware of, and how toxic or risky this is. Thanks, and sorry in advance if this is not an appropriate use for this reddit.
