“After years of loyalty, my best friend said our friendship was ‘fake’.”

Storytime 🌌✨

I had a friend. Our friendship started in 8th grade. I really cared about her and even tried to like the things she liked just so we could spend more time together.

Around that time people found out she was bisexual. After that almost everyone stopped talking to her. The surprising part was that people also stopped talking to me, just because I stayed by her side. Even her so-called close friends distanced themselves.

But I didn’t leave.

Years passed and I tried to support her in every possible way. Later we both switched schools for 11th and 12th, but eventually we ended up in the same school again.

During 12th grade, she said something that really hurt me. She told me that if she ever made a priority list, the two people who had already left her would still come before me. I never questioned her about it back then, but it stayed with me.

After school our lives went different ways. I took a drop year for NEET, and she started her graduation. We both moved away from our hometown.

Once I even went to visit her when she was in her first year of college.

Later when I joined college too, one night I got drunk and around 1 AM I called her and told her how much she meant to me and how important she had been in my life.

When I mentioned what she had said back in 12th grade, she completely denied it. She said she never said that. When I insisted that I clearly remembered it, she said that even if she had said something like that, it just meant I had been holding grudges all these years and that our friendship was basically fake anyway.

After that conversation, our friendship was never the same.

A few days later I tried calling her again, hoping we could fix things. But somehow the situation turned into me being blamed for everything.

Sometimes I wonder if standing by someone when everyone else leaves actually means anything.
