Is it normal for new seasons to be really laggy?

Season 22 just started and all my games are really laggy. For example, why my car goes over boost, I don't get the boost until after I've completely passed the pad. This has been happening in every single game since the season started. Also, it feels weird to control my car and it's been making me play really bad, but I'm not sure if that's the new season or because I just bought a new controller. I'm planning on returning my controller and getting a new one if no one else is having this problem. Thoughts?
