30M with alot of platonic friendships with women. 28F gf has a hard time accepting this. How do you all deal with this sort of situation? Vice versa too, want to hear men with gf's/wives with male friends. None of those toxic people mentalities though lol.
Hey everyone! Bringing this up as its something I consistently think about.
I am someone who is fortunate enough to be blessed with a village of friends. Homeboys I can kick the can with and laugh endlessly with. Homeboys I can have a real heart to heart conversation with. Homeboys I can sit and do absolutely nothing with. The women in my life however, I feel have played and continue to play a fundamental role in my life. I have about 6 amazing girl, friends - one of which is my longest friendship since elementary, love her to death - who mean the world to me and are important to the man I am today. All but one are in relationships or married, and I always make it a point to build some sort of relationship/friendship with bf/husband. Fortunate to say I am friends with their partners and will hang out with them individually too. Not just these friends, but my 3 main cousins are women too and I consider them my sisters. ALL this to say that, because of them I am the decent man I am today. Not tooting my own horn, but I think this is important.
My gf and I have been dating for a little over 4 years now. She has no male friends outside of her gay best friend - great guy btw.
It seems like she struggles with the idea of these friends being so important and fundamental to my life. She doesn't hate them. Gets along pretty well with all of them - worst type of relationship she might have with them is not knowing too much about one of them, but that's about it. If we're having a fight, there have been a couple times, where she worries about me going to my girl, friends to look for comfort. I must admit that in the past I used to run to my friends to get their POV to better understand my gf, so I understand where I play a part in it, but she'll bring up how me and my friends would go on "dates" pre-relationship lol. I have never given my gf any reason to be jealous. My friends and I have set proper boundaries, which tbf there wasn't a whole need for "boundaries" as it's a platonic relationship. We either get lunch, dinner, drinks or I hang out with them at home with their partner.
I don't want to say it's jealousy bc I really don't think it is. Could it be she's jealous in the sense of, she wishes she had that with male friends? I do think it would be weird for her to make male friends now lol versus, I came with a package and haven't made any new female friendships since being in a relationship outside of coworkers who are married.
How did you deal with it? Is it still an issue? Did they swallow their pride and just accepted it? None of that, "Friends of the opposite sex never works" or "do you see our parents having friends of the opposite sex" bullshit. Grow tf up.
Can also answer any questions! Thanks :)
