Noobie question

I'm sure this has been answered a thousand times, but every thread I read, I have new questions about it. I believe I am looking for a USB hub, not a USB dock. I am looking to put my wireless keyboard/mouse plugins on this hub, along with maybe a phone charger, and other small gadgets. I would like to turn these ports on and off depending on when I am using them. So let's say I take my phone off the charger, and can turn off that USB port from that hub(?) when not in use. If I am on the right track with a USB hub, I am seeing a powered one is the way to go, any recommendations? If I am explaining something other than a USB hub, please let me know! Would love to hear more options and a better explanation for me to understand
