How I understand Robby's thinking as of EP 10
He really doubted dr. Al. He frequently her authority and deliberately gave her a hard time by being difficult to work with. She doesn't let that get to her, she states her boundaries clearly and keeps going. She proves her strength and competence handling personal issues. She passed that little test he gave her.
She's witty and funny, she does the trachea procedure for the first time and succeeds, (shows her competence again) she seems to get along with the staff or at least not be hated by them (especially with Langdon, im sure that's to give stark contrast to his and Robby's Big Conflictâ„¢), she gets along with Abbot (his best fucking friend. HIS. Goddamn it, "I like her." "More than me?" He's JEALOUS!!!) What is more, she's more empathic than him. (Her speech on his crashout at Mohan) AND, fuck, the higher-ups love her.
Not only is she as good as him, she's better. And now HE'S below her. Episode 1, it was the exact opposite. That's a MASSIVE blow to his ego.
Now the one thing that makes him important, the one thing that makes him still connected to reality, being good at what he does, saving people and guiding young doctors - it doesn't matter. He is replaceable. He's been searching for proof that the world still needs him and he can't find anything now.
Its also clear as day how much of his anger at Mohan is projection for his ginormous shame for the Pittfest pedes scene. I bet Frank's mocking (FUCK. YOU!!) made him that much more unable to forgive him, it's such a sore spot for Michael. He stood behind the barriers after all. And that's why he likes Whitaker so much, he saw Robby at his most vulnerable and accepted him for it, didn't tell anyone, didn't question his ability to work as a chief physician. He showed compassion for a version of him that he himself hated.
I really really love how the show hasn't stated what Robby thinks about doctor al. We knew he was distrustful and quite condescending but that's changed. We don't know what his opinion on her is, we just see that he's thinking about something. And by God am I waiting to see If my understanding of him is right.
Al-Hashimi is such a foil to Robby's flaws.
The Pitt does show don't tell so fucking well. I'm literally crying, not even exaggerating. I need to kiss all the writers. This is how you write your characters perfectly.
