When the towers fell

Where the people inside crushed from the falling upper floors, or did they experience weightlessness and fell in unisome with the floors. I ask as I was listening to Kevin Cosgrove's call and he yells out before the call cuts off. He certainly knew something had changed for the worse, I always wondered if that was ground giving away below him and his reaction was that off someone who was falling.
