Difficulty sliders should just return in games.

Discussion

You cant satisfy everyone, but that is why with the recent patch of the remake... difficulty sliders, that many older games possessed, should actually be brought back into games.

Let's look at an unrelated, but still, old horror title in System Shock.

Difficulties sliders range from:

  • Combat Slider (difficulty of combat)
  • Guidance Slider (how much the game will lead you)
  • Cyber Slider (basically minigame difficulty, or cyberspace as it's called in SS)
  • Puzzle Slider (how hard the puzzles will be)

The closest traditional horror that does this to FF is Silent Hill, which offers sliders for combat and puzzles.

My issue with the patch is less so that I don't want people to play the game exactly how they want (which is why I'm a massive advocate for a System Shock esque slider in ALL games) but that the original balance of the game is now effectively lost on consoles without owning the disc, and even then you would have to endure the noise filter by force if you did this.

My disagreement with the patch stems from... we have difficulties, why blanket remove it, affecting even Nightmare mode? Why wouldn't they apply a less harsh tweak like Story maybe totally removing aggravated spirits, Normal applying them carefully, Hard going nuts with them and Nightmare being brutal with them?

Part of the problem is the game kinda isn't gonna hold your hand tutorial wise, it might throw up a single tutorial on the Exposure filter and expect you to go looking into the Upgrades that mitigate aggravated spirits a fair bit (like the Pacification upgrade), but my concern partly comes down to just how much of this feedback WAS from people who put no time into learning mechanics? The game has been out ONE day. ONE.

And it just pains me to see I can now never experience Nightmare mode to its fullest brutality unless I buy the disc and play 1.00 with the noise filter.

TLDR: Games should adopt a more branching difficulty system, akin to System Shock. Let players tweak all aspects to their liking so they can find the most fun instead of taking away some players enjoyment to fulfill someone else's.
