Where to start?

I heard conflicting opinions on this series where some say the gameplay and level design are atrocious and get reused in different games, is that true? And is it as much of an issue as it sounds?

Also when it comes to the VII game which version is better base VII or VIIR? I never really found a concrete answer for this one
