How to help an autistic sponsee converse after meetings
I have a new sponsee who has been committed to the program since we started. All’s good there, but I am looking for advice on how to help her connect & find her people during fellowship -
It’s hard for me to get a word in edgewise as we work together, but I’m managing that by just interrupting her (it feels wrong to me, but she has no issue and I have no bad intent) - I also explained that shares should be short during meetings, and she has obliged.
However, when go out to eat and go to events, she talks at people rather than with them; the info-dumping has been breaking up the back-and-forth conversations we usually have at dinner (because once she starts, the original topics become lost.)
A lot of this disturbance in me is my own defects; I do my nightly inventories & I did a thorough one about the situation and it’s a LOT of self-centeredness and fear. (I want to have the fun convos we used to have, I have social anxiety, the classic alcoholic/human yearning to be liked, and I grew up with an autistic brother, adding another layer to thinking I need to “help”.) I’m projecting my fears!
My sponsor, who is far more socially skilled and assertive than I, recommended quietly & verbally “nudging” her if it’s BAD when we’re at restaurants, but otherwise just let it go and pray about it and stfu. She’s right, AND I’m curious if there’s a certain way to interrupt that isn’t hurtful or obvious to others. Any assistance?
