Goodbye, yellow brick road
Hi everyone. I’m writing because tonight feels heavy, and I thought maybe this is a place where someone might understand.
For a long time I struggled with addiction. Climbing out of that place took more strength than I ever thought I had. When I finally started putting my life back together, I held on to one dream like it was a rope pulling me forward: studying abroad, especially in Germany.
That dream became my motivation to stay clean and keep moving.
I worked harder than I ever had before. I learned English and scored 115/120 on the TOEFL iBT, graduated college with 98/100, and took a temporary 9–5 job while applying for scholarships that might make studying abroad possible for someone like me.
For months I held on to hope. Every application felt like a step toward the life I was trying to build—the person I was trying to become.
Today I got the final answer.
It was a no.
And it hit harder than I expected. That dream was the light I kept walking toward when everything else felt dark. The thing that reminded me why I was trying so hard to stay on the right path.
Now it feels like the road just… ended.
I’m scared because without that goal in front of me, I can feel the same old chains I fought so hard to break starting to pull me back toward the abyss. I don’t want to go back there. I really don’t.
I’m trying to remind myself that one rejection shouldn’t undo years of progress. But tonight it’s hard to believe that.
If anyone here has ever had a moment where something important collapsed and it made your recovery feel fragile again… how did you keep going?
