What does it take for you to feel represented by a character physically
What do you look out for in "black" characters to make you feel like they're "black" or that they represent you.
- Is it their ethnic group
- How they look/are drawn
- If they have sub-saharran african dna
- How they identify
- Their culture
For example...I'm East African and I can say I feel represented by African/African American/Afro-Latin/Afro-Carribean characters. However when it comes to characters who are "black" but dont have sub-saharan african...I dont really relate. Such as Aboriginal people for example. I dont know if its my own unconcious biases or not...though I would like to know if Im alone in that thought.
I also dont feel represented by characters who arent drawn with black african features....even if they are stated to have major african ancestry
I also know some people may disregard East Africans as "black"...so I wonder if I'm too close minded like they are lol.
Either way what are your opinions....
