I made a (free) investment / rentvestment research and calculation tool - would love some feedback
Hi everyone,
I'm a software developer by trade, and when I was looking to buy an investment property a few years ago, I wrote a tool to find suburbs with the best yield. Since buying the property and telling my friends about the tool, I've had numerous requests to use it, so I decided to make it available for free online.
Presenting Rentvest: https://rentvest.property
I've framed it as a tool to help people looking to get on the property ladder, and "rentvest" - live where they want and invest somewhere else - but honestly, I think it's valuable for property investors too.
I've used it as an opportunity to polish my UX skills, and I'm quite proud of the end result. In a world of boring mortgage calculators and similar tools, I think this one is quite fun to use.
Some features I'm proud of:
- Fully responsive, mobile first design.
- Easily save and share scenarios or research with your friends or partner.
- You can get really granular with the controls, and see whether 2 or 3 bedrooms perform better in the same suburb.
- Graph the suburb's property price growth over the last 4 years.
- Tooltips everywhere to help give context
- Full contextual pages with history for postcodes and suburbs. Just search!
- Rankings leaderboards to see best performing postcodes australiawide.
On the last point - the rankings pages are really interesting, but they're also thrashing my database, so please be patient if they take a few secs to load. I'm working on speeding it up.
While I'm pretty happy with where it's at right now, I'd love to know what you all think about it - is it actually useful? Am I missing something?
Thanks and enjoy!
ps: Reached out to the mods about this - hopefully it's okay to post considering it's 100% free and a resource for the community. Posting this is an issue, I'm happy to remove the post. 🤞
