Feeling stuck in IT – Need advice on where to pivot (Cyber, DevOps, Cloud, or Data
Hey everyone,
I’ve been working in IT for about 7 years now, mainly in application support. To give some context – my day-to-day involves troubleshooting production issues, coordinating with different teams when applications go down, monitoring system health, and making sure SLAs are met. I don’t do much (if any) coding, but I’ve built a strong foundation in supporting enterprise apps and understanding how different parts of IT connect.
Background-wise:
* Prior military, still serving on the Reserve side.
* Hold a security clearance.
* Comfortable working under pressure and dealing with complex, fast-moving situations.
Lately, I’ve been feeling stuck. The industry looks shaky, and honestly, if I got laid off tomorrow, I don’t feel confident I’d land on my feet quickly. I keep going in circles about what direction to take:
* Cybersecurity (my clearance could help, but I have no real hands-on exposure).
* DevOps (seems in-demand, but feels like I’d need to learn a ton of tools).
* Cloud (AWS/Azure certs sound valuable, but I don’t know where to begin).
* Data (intriguing, but I don’t have a background in it).
I’ve been “thinking about it” for a while now but haven’t taken action. I know I need to skill up, but the choices feel overwhelming, and I don’t want to waste time chasing the wrong path.
For folks who have been through something similar:
* Where would you recommend someone with my background start?
* Is there a realistic way to pivot into one of these fields without having to go back to school full-time?
* Does my security clearance make cyber the most logical move, or is that overrated?
