Need advice on how to convince South Asian Parents to not treat me like a child.
I'm 23 yrs old (female) and live with my parents. I'm still studying and do not have a job yet. My parents are generally very good. But they are very protective and this becomes a problem from time to time. They plan to send me abroad to study but they won't send me alone or with my brothers (20, 18) to go swim. In fact, they won't send me alone to any place even if it's just a few kilometres away from home. I do understand that they are concerned for my safety. But I don't understand how they can be this protective of me and still plan to send me to a whole new country all alone. They won't let me learn to take care of myself or be independent but I know that I need the experience to face whatever I have to face when the time comes for me to study abroad. How do I convince my parents that I am capable of handling myself? They allow my younger brothers to go and come alone any time of the day but won't allow me because I'm a "girl". What do I do about this? And my mom has begun to say that she might not send me abroad after all because I'm getting "too westernised" and "won't care for my safety". But I want to study abroad. It's been my dream since forever. How do I convince my parents to let me have more freedom?
