Ake ststes that the Omega 43 molecule was being developed as an energy source that could provide energy to a planet for a million years. I believe that this was the result of needing to research new energy sources after the burn; and having discovered it they were preparing to lift whole planets out of energy scarcity, essentially paving the way for the utopia they've created on Sol III.

I absolutely love this bit of lore, the Federation using it's powers to do the most good.
