AITJ for getting upset after my mom let herself inside my apartment to “help me out”
I moved into my own apartment recently. It’s the first place I’ve had completely to myself and I was honestly really excited about it.
Growing up, my parents were always the type to just come into my room without knocking or rearrange things because they thought they were “helping.” I know they never meant anything bad by it, but it always made me feel like I didn’t really have any privacy.
So when I moved out, having my own space where I could control everything felt like a big deal to me.
When I was moving in, my parents helped bring some furniture and boxes. At one point my mom asked if she could have a spare key “in case of emergencies.” I told her I’d think about it, but I honestly wasn’t comfortable with that. I told her if something ever actually happened they could call me or the building manager.
She didn’t seem thrilled but she dropped it.
A couple weeks later I came home from work and something immediately felt off. My place was way cleaner than I left it. The kitchen counters were wiped down, my couch pillows were arranged differently, and the laundry I had left in a basket was folded neatly on my bed.
At first I was confused and thought maybe maintenance had come in or something.
Then I saw a text from my mom that said, “Stopped by earlier to help you clean a bit :)”
I was really confused because I never gave her a key.
When I called her, she casually told me she asked my landlord for the spare key earlier that day. She apparently told him she was my mom and wanted to surprise me by cleaning my place a little.
I didn’t react very well to that. I told her it made me really uncomfortable that she went behind my back to get into my apartment. Even if she was trying to help, it felt like a huge invasion of privacy.
She got defensive and said she was just trying to do something nice for me. My dad also got involved and said I should be grateful because “most people would love someone cleaning their place for free.”
The thing is, it’s not really about the cleaning. It’s the fact that she went out of her way to get access to my apartment after I already said I wasn’t comfortable with her having a key.
I ended up calling my landlord and asking him not to give my key to anyone without my permission again. Apparently that embarrassed my mom because now she thinks I made it sound like she did something wrong.
Now my parents are both annoyed with me and saying I’m being dramatic and treating my own family like strangers.
But to me it just feels weird that someone entered my home without telling me.
