AITAH for keeping quiet about friends bday?

This isn't a big deal, But I just wanted to get some thoughts.

You see, I am a person that doesn't truly care about birthdays. Mainly because, over the years, I no longer have the energy to care. After trying to be that friend that wishes the small group of people i do associate with a happy birthday when their birthdays come up, It occurred to me one day that, the same energy really wasn't reciprocated for me, at the slightest. I wasn't offended by that realization, heck, Honestly, It felt like a weight off my back truthfully. To me it was a, "oh okay, cool, maybe they don't really care either, so, I guess, let me stop caring".

I don't necessarily expect people to be as thoughtful as I am naturally. It's just truthfully in my nature to be thoughtful like that. It can be a natural pain being like that sometimes, but i can't help it, because deep down that's just how l am. I love to love, and I love to give, I enjoy being thoughtful about folks I care for.

Over the years, I have on and off, voiced my opinion about birthdays to some of my buddies. I've voiced opinions on my birthday as well. I don't really need any recognition. Heck, growing up i never really had it, so I'm use to not getting it.

Here's the flip side of that. And maybe this is where I may be at fault. Those rare moments when someone that I believe values me on the same level that I value them, gives me that recognition, smh, It does deep down make me feel special. I might get bashful, and play it off like, "ayeee thank you, but cut that mushy crap out", lol, but at the end of the day, when i get to sit with myself and think about how the day played out, it does make me a little emotional that someone took the time to acknowledge me. I'm just not the type of person that feels the need to express to someone, "hey, if this person is special to you and you care for them, when it comes to something as simple as birthday wishes, whether they say they like to get them or not, DO IT ANYWAY, give them a solid birthday greeting".

My birthday came, and one of my buddies Gives me a birthday greeting. And of course, I play bashful and all that jazz. But I deep down appreciated it. I thanked them. And then told him to move along with the rest of the day. This was a group chat mind you. Where several of my buddies are a part of.

Call me stupid, but i somewhat expected to at least get the same small recognition from the rest of the cast. Considering how long I've known them, 20+ years. I get silence from the rest. Legit nothing. The group just moved over the topic like it didn't happen. As if they didnt see one of the buddies just wish me a happy birthday. Common decency would say, "hey, let me just throw a greeting out there for a 20+ year friend". I got crickets. Not even enough love in their mind to think, "man, as much history as we have, I can at least give him a birthday greeting".

I admit, I was a tad taken aback. I wasnt shocked, but at the same time, I was like, wow. Not a big wow, but a small wow, but still, a wow nonetheless.

Fast forward few weeks later. It was the birthday of another buddy in the group. This person claims to not really care too much about birthday wishes either. I wake up to birthday greetings from everyone in the group extended to this person. I hate to admit it, but it made me feel some type of way. In my head I was like, "so even when this person doesnt like it, you all felt the need to give it to them?". Why didn't I get that? And not that this next part truly matters, but Hell, I'm the better friend to the rest of ya'll, if you were comparing him and I. I sat on that thought for a little, as I watched the group get excited and playful with birthday greetings to our mutual buddy.

Want to know what i did? Nothing. I avoided the group all together for 2 weeks.

The mutual friend even had some random bday party get together. Sent the invite in the group message. I saw it. I ignored it.

2 weeks later, I pop back in the group, like it was just another day. Which is normal for me, and honestly all of us. We all at times just disappear from the group, and handle life things.

I was met with, "dang, where you been at bro". I gave a run of the miles old daddy response. "Eh, you know how life be lifin"

I was then met with, "Man, you missed out on my bday the other day"

I replied back with another old daddy response, "Oh word, my bad".

And left it at that.

Passive aggressive I guess, when you really dig deep into it. But heck, they would never know.

They playfully retort, "Well damn, fuck you too then". Lol Which is just common jokes between buddies of 20+ years.

I then smoothly pivoted the topic to NBA news soon after that, Icing out the whole bday talk.

Slightly irritated, because in my mind I was like,

"I didn't even get a simple acknowledgement from you on mines, and I honestly expected you of all people to be the one that did it, not the other homey".

Ahh well, this was a long pointless baby shit ass rant.

AITAH?
