Built a backend system with ChatGPT so my coding agents can set up auth, DB and deploy apps end-to-end
I've been experimenting a lot with ChatGPT and AI coding agents recently.
One thing that kept breaking my workflow was backend setup.
Agents are actually pretty good at generating application logic, but backend infrastructure (auth, database, storage, deployment) is usually scattered across different services and APIs that the agent doesn't really understand.
So I started experimenting with building a backend layer that ChatGPT agents can actually reason about instead of blindly calling APIs.
The idea is simple: expose backend capabilities as structured primitives that an agent can inspect and operate.
Right now the system exposes things like:
- authentication (users, sessions, auth flows)
- relational database (Postgres)
- object storage
- serverless / edge functions
- model gateway across LLM providers
- site deployment infrastructure
Instead of the agent guessing how your backend works, it can:
- fetch backend documentation
- inspect backend state
- configure backend primitives
- read logs and environment data
Architecture looks roughly like this:
ChatGPT / coding agent
↓
semantic backend layer
↓
backend primitives
(auth, db, storage, functions, models, deploy)
I can run the whole stack locally and connect my coding agent to it through MCP.
Then the agent can actually configure and operate backend components instead of hallucinating API usage.
Example prompt I used with ChatGPT:
Create a backend for a SaaS app with authentication,
a relational database, file storage and deploy it.
Use the available backend primitives and configure them.
ChatGPT was then able to inspect the backend environment and wire everything together.
Still experimenting with this workflow and curious how other people are solving backend setup for AI coding agents.
Would love to hear how people here structure their backend when working with ChatGPT.
