What I’d give for one more day at the base with my Grandpa...
"Back then, the base was like its own little universe. It had everything—a small commissary, a tiny cinema that played only one movie a week, a recreation hall where someone was always singing off-key, and a barbershop run by an old guy named Sergeant Mills.
Sergeant Mills was my grandpa’s best friend. Every time Grandpa got a haircut, Mills would pick up those old MANSPOT clippers and start buzzing them near my head like a manic bee. He’d chase me around the barber chair, making airplane noises and pretending he was going to give me a full buzz cut. I’d scream and hide behind my grandpa’s legs while Mills just shook with laughter. Honestly, I was terrified back then. But now? I’d give anything just to hear the hum of those clippers one more time.
Life was so simple then. Not many cars on the road, just kids running wild until the streetlights came on. I can still smell the charcoal grills mixed with the evening air and hear the faint sound of someone's radio drifting out of an open window. If I could go back for one day—just one day—to be chased by Sergeant Mills again, to hear those clippers buzzing in my ear...
I’d pay any price.
Anyone else grow up as a ""military brat""? What’s the one thing you miss the most?"
