Usurper Reborn - a text-based RPG with full screen reader support (NVDA/JAWS), built from the ground up with accessibility in mind
Hey everyone. I'm the developer of Usurper Reborn, a text-based RPG inspired by the classic 1993 BBS door game. I wanted to share it here because accessibility was a core priority, not an afterthought.
What the game offers for screen reader users:
- Full NVDA and JAWS compatibility. Dedicated accessible launchers bypass the graphical terminal and run directly in your system console.
- A
--screen-readerCLI flag that strips all box-drawing characters, decorative Unicode, ANSI art, and visual bars. Every menu, every combat action, every shop interaction is plain text. - Menus use
1. Labelformat instead of bracket-based[X] Labelso screen readers parse them cleanly. - All 25+ sub-menus across the entire game have screen reader paths. Combat, dungeon exploration, shops, character management, settlements, the guild system -- everything.
- Steam's launch options support it. Set
--screen-readerin Steam launch options and you're good from the first screen. - Online multiplayer works too. SSH in and play with sighted players on the same server. The
/wholist, chat, group dungeon crawling -- all accessible.
What kind of game is it?
Turn-based RPG with 11 classes, 10 races, 50+ floor dungeon, NPC relationships, 4 recruitable companions, a faction system, player housing, a settlement you help build, tournaments, an achievement system, and 7 endgame boss fights leading to New Game+. There's a full online multiplayer mode where you can group up, chat, join guilds, and fight world bosses together.
It's free and open source (GPL v2) on GitHub, and also available on Steam if you want automatic updates. The online server is free to play via SSH.
How to try it:
- Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4336570/Usurper_Reborn/
- SSH:
sshusurper@play.usurper-reborn.net-p 4000(password:play) - GitHub: https://github.com/jknight/usurper-reborn
I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback on the accessibility experience. If something doesn't work well with your screen reader setup, I want to know so I can fix it. This is an ongoing project and I'm actively developing it.
