Junior SWE to AI Platform SWE, thoughts?
Hey all,
Working as a junior full-stack SWE (9 months experience) in a medium-sized company (no global presence). Recently received an offer from a F500 company for a role of an AI Platform SWE, need some career advice.
Current role (Pros):
- Start-up culture hence huge autonomy (small team)
- Good tech stack for enterprise-scale systems (React, Spring Boot, cloud-native on Azure)
- 5 day WFO, but only 30 minute travel door-to-door
- Extremely high job security, no chance of layoffs
Current role (Cons):
- Senior team members lack strong technical depth, leaving no room for mentorship. I've had to make major architecture decisions recently, which in my opinion is something that juniors should never be responsible for without proper guidance
- Department is shifting more towards systems/hardware integration in the future, which I'm not really interested in
- Promotion by tenure, not merit
- Below median base pay
- Weak company brand name on resume
- Low AI adoption
For the new role,
Pros:
- Good brand name on resume
- Higher base pay (+20%)
- AI-driven culture
Cons:
- Total TC increase is only about +7% despite the higher base pay (significantly lower bonus scheme compared to current company)
- Unsure about pivoting from a generalized SWE this early in my career
- 5 day WFO, about 1.5H travel door-to-door
- Company has performed some layoffs in recent years
My main priority right now is career growth, and the new role seems to offer better trajectory despite the trade-offs. Thinking of negotiating for a higher base pay so that the TC is about a 12-15% bump, but not too sure if I'll be able to do that given my limited experience.
Would appreciate any advice, thanks!
