How KISS changed their sound - going from hard rock to more modern sounds

KISS evolved their sound and are possibly one of the most successful hard rock bands of the 1970s. 1981's Music from "The Elder" was hated by fans and later, the band themselves and 1992's Revenge was met with lukewarm responses both changing from the band's classic style. Both were followed by returns to classic sound (1982's Creatures of the Night for the former, the reunion album 1998's Psycho Circus for the latter). A lesser case is the second studio album 1974's Hotter than Hell, which is much heavier than their usual output, to the point only the title track (Hotter than Hell), which is one of the few exceptions, remains well known.
