[Acne] Mirena IUD. Help! Does it calm down or go away?
Ok. I’m sorry if this is a stupid question I starting to get worried. Can I take birth control pills while having IUD.
I just recently got the Mirena IUD in December 2025. I have been getting what I suspect is hormonal cancer around my chin and my right cheek. I have had acne prone skin since I was 13 years old (now 24). At 15 I was put on BC pills to help with acne. Didn’t work entirely for a while and then I changed to a new prescription at the age of 20 and it did wonders once I got an established face routine. By 22 I had perfect skin, no scarring.
I have been in a relationship for 3 years and the pill was just not convenient for my lifestyle and habits. So after a lot of thought, I decided to get Mirena. My doctor agreed it was the best choice since the BC I was taking before was hormonal and I did great with it. Besides the normal spotting and cramps in the beginning I have had no problems with the IUD.
Around the beginning of February I noticed I was getting a few pimples around my jawline. I found it odd since whenever I did get pimples they were individual and usually around my forehead. It is now march and I am getting pimples on my chin, more scattered on my lower and upper cheek. As well as small ones across my forehead. I almost thought it was exzema but I believe to be related to the rest of my breakout due to timing.
I have not changed anything with eating habits, water intake, medications, and I wash pillowcases regularly. I am a clean person. I don’t know what else it could be besides the IUD. I guess my biggest questions/ concerns are
-
Is it just my body adjusting and will it go away
-
I can’t afford to get it removed or spend hundreds going to a dermatologist for them to do nothing
-
Are there medications to help with this
-
Is it an option to take my old pill subscription simultaneously while keeping mirena since it was low-med dose to help acne ( I’m sorry if that’s stupid but it’s worth a shot) or will that be too many hormones and make it worse
Please help! It’s manageable but I am trying to fix it now before it gets too bad. I have seen way worse and I think my mental health would plummet if I went back to how my acne used to be.
