Customer Service in Private Health Insurance What to Expect

Hi all,

When we're comparing policies, it's easy to get fixated on the level of cover, outpatient limits, and the monthly premium. But the quality of an insurer's customer service is something that often gets overlooked until it's too late. When you actually need to make a claim, the experience can make or break the value of your entire policy.

The difference can be huge. Imagine one person spending 45 minutes on hold, only to speak to someone who isn't sure about their cover, leading to a week-long delay for pre-authorisation. It adds a massive layer of stress when they're already unwell.

Now imagine another person who starts a claim on an app, gets a call back from a dedicated case manager within hours, and has their treatment approved the same day. They feel supported and can focus on their health. The policy itself might be identical, but the outcome is completely different.

From what I've seen, the best service isn't just a "nice to have." It seems to boil down to a few key things:

  • Accessibility: Can you get through quickly? Good providers have UK-based call centres with short wait times, but also offer solid digital options like apps or secure messaging for starting claims and uploading documents.

  • Speed & Efficiency: How fast do they authorise treatment? The goal should be hours or a day, not a week of chasing. Delays in authorisation can mean delays in getting care.

  • Clarity: Do you get clear, straight answers about your cover without confusing jargon? No one wants a surprise bill because something wasn't explained properly.

  • Quality of Support: Are the staff empathetic and knowledgeable? Some insurers provide a dedicated case manager for more complex claims, which can be a huge help in feeling supported.

Full disclosure: these insights are from a guide I work on. I just thought the core principles were really valuable to share and discuss here.

What has your real-world experience been with your insurer's customer service during a claim? Any providers stand out for being particularly good or bad?
