Which foundation works best as a base under heavy makeup?

I’ve noticed that no matter how carefully some people apply heavy makeup, it either starts sliding off or ends up looking cakey by the afternoon. Apparently, having the right foundation as a base can make a huge difference in wear time and smoothness.

I’ve tried a few lightweight and medium-coverage foundations, but when I layer full-coverage products on top, they tend to crease or separate. I’m looking for something that can hold up under heavier makeup without looking thick or patchy.
