Predoc Fellow/RA Opportunities

Hey. I have applied to MS programs but believe my profile is better suited for a PhD. So my plan is to defer now just as a backup and apply for a PhD next year. I'm planning to look for RA or Predoc Fellow roles. Should I be approaching profs through cold mail or just look at uni portals?
