Lump Sum During a Recession vs Continuing SIP
I keep seeing the same advice everywhere:
“Don’t time the market. Just keep doing your SIP.”
Which makes sense… most of the time.
But here’s something I’ve been wondering.
If markets drop 30–40% during a recession, wouldn’t that be the exact time a lump-sum investment makes more sense than just continuing a normal SIP?
For example:
Let’s say someone invests ₹10k every month through SIP.
During a crash, prices fall heavily.
Instead of only investing ₹10k that month, what if they deploy extra cash and invest ₹1–2 lakh lump sum while prices are depressed?
Historically, a lot of market returns come from the recovery phase after crashes.
So the real question becomes:
Is blindly continuing SIP actually leaving opportunity on the table during big downturns?
Or is this just another way people accidentally try to “time the market”?
Curious what people here think:
Do you stick to SIP no matter what…
Or do you intentionally deploy lump sums during crashes?
