Are there any movies or shows where an autistic character appears ‘typical’?

🫩 Burnout

I know there are plenty of movies/shows that portray “high-functioning” autism where the main character can still go to work, maintain a healthy routine, and do fairly well in life.

Examples: Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Move to Heaven, and I recently tried watching episode 1 of Atypical, which seems to have a similar vibe.

But I find it difficult to resonate with them. Yes, these characters function in society while carrying social difficulties, but they still fit into what most people think autism looks like.

I’m curious if there are any portrayals of high-masking autistic characters. Maybe someone like this:

• blends in so well socially that no one suspects they’re neurodivergent, but they crash or shut down at the end of the day/week in their own room

• doesn’t have the stereotypical shark or train interests, but instead has special interests that look “neurotypical,” like makeup or fashion

• instead of being exceptionally good at their job, they struggle because they’re perfectionistic and afraid of what others think

• experiences hyper-empathy — they understand others deeply, but it becomes emotionally overwhelming

• struggles with depression or suicidal thoughts due to constantly trying to adapt to a typical lifestyle like working or studying

• struggles with substance use or other harmful coping behaviors in order to keep masking

• struggles emotionally with life transitions, like starting a new job

• instead of people saying “you’re weird” or “she’s odd,” they hear things like: “But you look normal!” or “So yours is mild, right?”

Basically, things that might look “normal” on the surface, but are actually the result of constant overcompensation and masking as an autistic adult.

I’d love to see a storyline that explores this direction. I think it could open people’s perspective about what autism can look like because someone who may have a typical lifestyle, high IQ or EQ, but is still deeply affected by their disability.

Let me know if there are any movies or shows with characters like this!

Just to avoid misunderstandings: I’m not saying existing autistic portrayals are wrong, or that lower-masking autistic people are “stereotypical.” I’m simply curious about this less visible side of autistic adult experiences.
