What does a project based contract REALLY mean?

So been on a hectic rollercoaster of a journey, long story short, 1 month ago, I packed my life in Canada and moved to Dubai for a great consultancy and data operations position working directly with real estate developers in GCC, a week or 2 later war broke out, things started to get very stressful, for them to ask me to go back to Canada, with my UAE visa canceled and them asking me to not travel before signing a new work contract, but this time it is project based so I can still continue my work but from abroad, with promise of moving me back whenever war is over.

what does it mean in the UAE working culture? This company is international with many offices all over.
