My husband and I visited a remote tribe in Kenya and something really awkward happened
My husband (26M) and I (24F) went to Kenya last week for vacation. One of the experiences we booked was visiting a small traditional tribe outside the main tourist areas. We ended up staying with them for two days to observe their customs and daily life. It was honestly fascinating. They showed us how they cook, dance, and explained some of their cultural rituals.
On the second night something unexpected happened.
A few members of the tribe approached my husband and started suggesting some kind of traditional “treatment” or ritual for men. Their English wasn’t great so they were being really indirect about it, but the general idea was that it involved a massage that they claimed was good for relaxation and “male strength.”
My husband and I have a very open and joking relationship, so at first we honestly thought it was funny. I told him if he was curious about their tradition he could try it. It seemed like something they took seriously as part of their culture.
They took him into a small tent-like hut to perform the ritual. At first they didn’t want me inside, probably because it’s normally private, but after some convincing they let me come in and stand near the entrance.
Inside, they explained that the massage specifically focused only on his private area as part of their tradition. They used some kind of herbal oil that had a strong smell and even gave off a little vapor when they warmed it.
What shocked me the most was the strength of the massage technique. I have never seen that kind of strong massage before, especially on such a sensitive area. The woman performing it used extremely firm pressure and very fast movements. I honestly thought it would hurt him, but my husband kept saying he was fine.
The whole process went on for hours. I was sitting there half amazed and half completely awkward watching what was happening.
By the end my husband looked completely exhausted.
What surprised me even more was that the next day he joked about wanting to go back for another session because he said it was strangely relaxing. That’s when I started feeling a little uncomfortable about the whole thing. I suddenly realized I didn’t love the idea of my husband going back into that hut again with the same women.
So we decided it was probably a good time to continue our trip and head back toward the city.
The whole experience was bizarre, cultural, and honestly one of the strangest moments of our vacation.
I still don’t know whether to laugh about it or pretend it never happened.
