Am I making the right decision to leave my house without my sister?
Hi Reddit, I hope everyone's having a good day or a good night but I seriously need some advice because I feel like my decision I'm making is not the best but also I am concerned for my sister's well-being. i'm gonna try to keep the story short as I can, but it's a lot of information.
Me (20m) and my sister (11f)
To began I'm officially moving out of my dad's house after I've been dealing with a lot of bullshit. I have been going through with him, especially with his own girlfriend.
My dad has been making really bad decision lately since he's too extremely focused on his girlfriend and his personal business that he claims he has. For information basically he has been doing handyman jobs all over the town that we live in. He doesn't have any type of business license or any type of classes certificate that requires to have a business. He basically is being hired by people across town and being paid by under the table, which a lot of people don't see nothing wrong with that but mainly my dad has not a lot of expert knowledge on how to do full handyman work, sure obviously he can learn on YouTube and other people that actually has more required skills for handyman, but my dad does not know how to make the knowledge of scheduling mainly because he doesn't earn a lot of money as he thinks he is.
That is because we live in a two-story house with four bedrooms and three bathrooms and it's only me, my little sister, my dad, and his girlfriend. And the rent is above $2600 per month, and obviously the utility bills can be really expensive. Usually my dad is mainly responsible for all the bills, especially his girlfriend Kinda, but my dad has a really bad money spending as he would buy a lot of parts a lot of junk that he claims that he would work on, but he never does especially to do future projects for our house which for note btw, he also never does... it started to make the house extremely messy and really dirty as well. My dad is constantly working day and night without any proper time to spend time with my little sister especially if I need some help that is related with mechanic or especially for anything in general, it started to make my little sister to be more independent which by the way she's 11 years old and that makes me really upset, considering that she's still a child and I feel like her childhood is being taken away and she has to grow up extremely soon sooner and all I want to give my sister is the childhood that she deserves but now she has to wake up on her own. Take care of herself, cook for herself and do everything independently. I do my best myself to be there for her, especially to give her the best childhood she can have, but I'm busy with college especially my mental health has been really bad because of my dad's decisions, not only that he's not focusing on his daughter(my sister) at all, but he's mainly focusing on his young girlfriend.
His girlfriend is extremely young, which my dad is 49 and his girlfriend is 29 which is an extreme age gap. The reason why my job is focusing on her that my sister is because the girlfriend has lost three kids through CPS, and she went through a nine year abusive relationship, which sounds like an extremely awful time to go through as a mother, which I for one understand what it feels like to lose children. And she's been living with us since October 2025, which would lead to my dad only knowing her for two weeks and after him getting to know her story of what she was going through he decided to move her into her own home in a short amount of time which I had my older brother who is living there at the time who is 31 completely unhappy with my dad's decisions, financially, especially to bring a stranger into our home and that's would lead to my brother to move to Louisiana without having to deal with my dad.
But obviously, the red flag is is that the girlfriend has a CPS case open, and obviously overtime I started to know why she lost her kids, and that would make me extremely upset at my dad for bringing this woman into our home. So this girl completely has four records on her criminal charge. Which is vandalism, burglary, arson, and wilful harm to the child (child abuse) and I got extremely upset with my dad for her move into our house by having the record, especially now living with us....Then She went back to jail for her child endangerment (abuse) charge with my sister in the house. but this entire arrest that she went through would lead to her having violent episodes. She would eventually have extremely mental breakdowns that would cause her to scream completely break our things in the house that belongs to us and completely not feed her pets at all completely, and then she would slap my dad and blame him for everything for him being in debt and for him lying to her, and she would just go on and on. But not to make things more messy enough by dealing with domestic violence from her and my dad being delusional and claiming to me by saying "she's going through a hard time that's all" or "I want you to be in her shoes for you to understand what she's going through" and "I don't understand why you cannot accept her."
I would not accept her mainly because of how her behavior has been influenced around our house. She basically is like a boss of our house now and basically feels like that she can control everyone especially my dad and my sister, and she tried to do it with me as well, which is crazy to me considering I live at my house my whole life since I was eight years old and it pisses me off that she feels like that she controls our house when mainly it's my dad.
The girlfriend would also cause more problems within the family. She started to go against my cousin and my uncle by twisting their words and basically saying different information to my dad, which would make my dad go against them and they completely lost all respect with my dad and the girlfriend. And what's crazy is is that I always been influenced with my dad and my dad would always go for his children first if they have concerns, but basically he does not do that anymore because the girlfriend decided to influence my dad to raise my rent from $600-$800. Which would make me have zero money at all once I paid the rent and I would have to wait a long period of time to earn money again since I receive special checks every month like Social Security but it's through a special program that I'm in to get assistance that is not related to disability.
But overtime with my dad's decisions and him supporting his girlfriend and for him thinking everything is normal and that he's doing the right thing and completely ignoring my sister's concerns most of the time, especially not teaching her properly about her hygiene, especially how to clean herself and everything I had to basically step in as a full parent to make sure my sister is on track with her school to make sure she's properly fed with food and to make sure she becomes a woman slowly. Especially because how much my dad and his girlfriend has been spending time together and how much my dad's been trying to help her mainly to go to her work releases and her professional classes to get her kids back. It makes me responsible for my sister now than my dad. And it makes me upset like I said, because my dad's not being a proper father figure to my sister, and I wouldn't have a lot of time to take care of my sister, cause I'm busy with college and also I'm dealing with my own mental health issues that would led me to be in bed for a couple of days as I'm diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
I would eventually try to warm my family of what my dad has been doing with his decisions financially and how he's been only focusing on his toxic girlfriend, but also how I'm concerned of the girlfriend hurting me or my sister because of her charges especially how she was able to go make my dad go against my cousin and my uncle, after the girlfriend decided to lied to my dad and basically twisted my cousin and my uncle's words. But basically my dad all has he's been doing is lying and claimed that the girlfriend is good and he's been trying to intervene with the family that she's part of the family and everything and it shows how much he really loves her and the fact it bothers me a lot knowing how much she's a really bad person and that she completely hurt her own child and she made a lot of bad decisions in our house and despite her telling her extreme impact and story of her, losing her daughters and her dealing with her toxic ex for nine years it makes me think to wonder if she was also a really bad person that did a lot of things with her ex, especially if she was not a good mother figure at all because the way she's treating me the way she's treating my dad and how she's been treating. My cousin and my uncle has been extremely unacceptable and concerning.
My final straw was eventually right after a couple weeks ago when my dad eventually gave me a prep talk telling me that he's gonna marry her and that he plans to have a whole life with her and everything and basically that he has more projects he wants to do around the house and that he's been earning a lot more money which for a fact, by the way, he has not our gas in our house got shut off and basically he had to find some way to pay it off which I found out he tried to ask my uncle for $7000, but my Uncle denied it, and that right there made me snapped, and it made me realize how much he lost his sanity to take care of his own daughter and how much his decision-making has been really hurting me, especially how it's been hurting our family since he's not listening to anyone's concerns and he's pretty much isolating himself from the whole family just to be with his girlfriend, especially with the girlfriend herself of her behavior and how much tree she's been mistreating me by completely breaking my own sentimental value picture that I kept for my older sister that lives in Florida that really meant a lot to me and how she's basically talking crap with everyone around us and how she she's been smoking wax in the bedroom, not taking care of her pets, lying to everyone, starting problems for no reason, and I have noticed some items in my room have gone missing.
But after that day, I had my last straw and I immediately told my dad I was moving out and now I have until April 1 I'm officially moving in with my mom that lives in the desert within Southern California. I'm officially packed up and ready to move and I'm waiting for the two bedroom apartment that my mom found to be approved but the only thing I'm having a massive issue is leaving my little sister. I tried calling CPS about the concerns of what I've gone through especially what the girlfriend has been doing to us and how my dad is not focusing to my sister and how much she's been focusing on the girlfriend instead and his work a lot since he's gone day and night, however, when the girlfriend had violent episodes and breakdowns, my sister was not there, thankfully so my sister sees the girlfriend as an innocent person which scares me a little, considering how the girlfriend can take advantage of what I've gone through and how much my dad can neglect my sister more and now that I'll be gone. I have other concerns mainly for my dad's finances since I know he's close to having an eviction to the house. And how much that he's growing on.
I really don't know what to do. I know I made the decision. To fully move out, but I'm scared for my sister and and I cannot take her at all obviously because I'm not her guardian and my mom has gone through rehab and everything and she's filing family court stuff so my main question is if I'm making the right decision to leave and how I'm going to manage the stress and more issues to come from my dad and his girlfriend.
What should I do.
