The Article:

There is a term circulating on social media this week that is more analytically precise than anything the royal press corps has produced about the Wales family in years.

Borrowed crowds.

On Thursday William and Kate visited Borough Market in London. The visit was described as a surprise. Rota journalists were present. Security had been arranged in advance. And Borough Market at lunchtime on a Thursday is one of the most densely populated food destinations in the capital, full of office workers, tourists, food lovers and Londoners who have been going there since long before anyone in this family was relevant to their lunch plans. The people in those photographs did not come for William and Kate. William and Kate came for the people. The crowd was borrowed. The warmth in the photographs was ambient. And the British press reported it as evidence of public affection.

This is not new. It is not even creative. It is a strategy with a documented history that stretches across multiple continents.

When William visited New York, the itinerary included a stop at the World Trade Center memorial. It is one of the most visited sites in the United States. Tourists come from every country in the world to stand at those pools and understand something about that day. On the day of the royal visit, tourists were held behind barriers while William moved through the space. The photographs showed crowds. They always do when you trap people who were already there and walk past them. That is not a crowd that came for you. That is a crowd that came for something that has nothing to do with you, and that you have inserted yourself into the frame of.

Brazil. The same pattern. A public space, a pre-existing gathering, a royal presence inserted into it and photographed against the backdrop of people who would have been there regardless.

The borrowed crowd strategy works because photography is not journalism. A photograph does not carry context. It does not tell you that the people behind the barrier came to see the memorial, not the prince. It does not tell you that Borough Market has been heaving at lunchtime since 1756. It does not tell you that the tourists who looked up from their stall and found a camera pointed at them were actually waiting for their halloumi wrap and are now accidentally evidence of royal popularity in seventeen newspaper front pages.

The strategy has become more concentrated recently because the alternatives have become more dangerous. Announced engagements in spaces the palace cannot pre-fill produce protesters. They produce men in Cornwall asking perfectly reasonable questions about Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein at a normal conversational volume. They produce Republic demonstrators outside Westminster Abbey with signs that say things that are true. They produce footage that the crisis management team, which is apparently earning its salary this week according to a rather precise observation on social media, cannot control.

So the calculus is simple. Go where the crowd already is. Do not announce publicly so that the organised opposition cannot mobilise. Invite the press corps privately so the photographs happen. And choose locations that guarantee visual warmth without requiring anyone to actually seek you out.

Borough Market. A brewery. A World Trade Center memorial. A Brazilian public square.

The through line is not interest in cheese or beer or remembrance or South American culture. The through line is that in each of these locations the crowd exists independently of the royal presence and will fill the background of any photograph taken there without having made any choice about the people in the foreground.

There is a word for what this is and it is not engagement. Engagement implies that someone sought you out. Someone chose to be in your presence. Someone showed up for you specifically.

What is happening in these photographs is the opposite. The institution is showing up for the crowd that showed up for something else and hoping that by Thursday evening the editorial distance between those two facts will have closed completely.

It has worked for years. It is still working. And every Londoner who has fought through Borough Market at lunchtime to get to the Neal's Yard stall on the other side knows exactly what was borrowed this week and what was not.

They came for the cheese. Not the crown.
