I was in favour of the Twitter ban but I'm starting to feel like it's pointless

Meta

I just saw this post where the OP posted an image from Twitter, linked the artist's account in a comment and got automoderated, and it made me think about the fact the subreddit has the no-Twitter rule in the first place, what goals it was intended to achieve and whether it's achieved them.

After Elon Musk unambiguously threw a Nazi salute at a Trump rally a fair few people decided they didn't want anything to do with that. It looked like people were moving to Bluesky, so a Twitter ban made intuitive sense at the time as a way to encourage the bleeding.

But… I think the bleeding has stopped? Half of Bluesky's traffic is from the US, and I'm not convinced participation from the rest of the world is growing. As a Twitter alternative it's playing second fiddle to Threads, which isn't really an improvement. (Bezos is just as morally bankrupt as Musk, he just hides it better.) People are clearly still posting stuff here from Twitter, and there are still artists on Twitter because, not speaking English, they don't get the message that it hates them and wants them to stop making art and start using Grok to make the world worse.

In short, I'm starting to feel like the Twitter ban has ceased to be a useful principled action and become an arbitrary restriction. Please convince me it's still a good idea.
