Rant about Will and Jane's endings because my babies deserved so much better

ranting

Something I hate about the ending of Stranger Things is that it seems like the duffers didn't care about what was actually satisfying endings for them and instead, they focused on "what's realistic?"

And, that ends with character endings that feel possible and realistic, but also leave you feeling like "...that's it?"

Is it realistic for Jane, a abuse victim who was dehumanized and forced to be a weapon since birth, to sacrifice herself in what was basically suicide because she both believes that there's no escape and that her friends survival was more important than her own? Yes.

But is it satisfying to see a young girl who has been abused and broken down for the first 12 years of her life slowly start to enjoy her life and see value in herself beyond what she was dehumanized to, only for her to regress back to her Season 1 mentality (in the "sacrificing myself for others is all I'm good for" way) and kill herself for the benefit of others? HELL NO.

Is it realistic for Will, a gay boy who has been bullied and abused and targeted and who has objectively suffered the most out of the party (meaning Mike, Dustin, Will and Lucas fyi), to believe that he is inherently unlovable due to his attraction to both boys in general and his childhood best friend, and then repeatedly regain and lose hope for a romantic relationship with said best friend, when all he wants is to be loved the way he loves Mike, only for Mike to not love him back, not clearly reject him, and have him fall in love with someone else? Yes.

But is it satisfying to see a gay boy continuously suffer from horrors beyond his comprehension, find comfort in his best friend who he has been madly in love with since likely before the start of the series, make it clear multiple times that Mike is everything he wants and everything he has ever truly wanted, make it clear that he loves and yearns for the sweet, innocent love that all his straight friends get with the boy that he knew since kindergarten, only for him to lose hope entirely and eventually be forced to move on with some random ass guy we as a audience don't know in the slightest who he meets at a GAY BAR of all things despite the sweet and innocent love he has always been aching for not normally being found in the place that is basically made for getting drunk and hitting on guys/girls you find hot? ABSOLUTELY THE FUCK NOT.

Like yes, it's a tragic ending. Yes, it's realistic. But that doesn't mean it's a good ending.

It doesn't make me think "oh that was tragic, but in a bittersweet way and I'm happy it ended like that". It gave me a numb achy feeling in my chest because it feels disrespectful to not only the characters, but everything they stood for, to the groups they represented, to the people who saw themselves in these characters.

Posting here because anti bylers often despise Will for being gay and bylers are the most media literate people in the fandom
