How many of you feel your life mostly went back to normal after the pandemic?
I know this is a touchy subject and I'll try to be as delicate as possible.
To clarify what I mean: most users here are American. I live in Sweden. The two countries reacted to and handled covid in very different fashions. In short, the Swedish government response was surprisingly "meh". I say surprisingly because people here are usually real sticklers about anything safety and health related. We had rules for social distancing and group numbers and people mostly adhered to them, but we never had lockdowns. We never had a mask mandate but it was recommended to wear one. When vaccines came around almost everybody took them.
Of course we had some similar change and damage done to our society; restaurants and nightlife took a nose dive they never recovered from. A whole generation of kids missed 1,5-2 years of school because utterly unprepared schools had to switch to 100% remote basically overnight. In the beginning hospitals quickly ran out of all types of protective and hygiene equipment and many people were deeply shook by how unprepared we were, there was some half-assed political debate about how dumb it was that we dismantled so much of our civil defense infrastructure in the 1990's.
But as a whole, things were pretty much back to normal by about 2024-2025 and most everybody treats it as a finished chapter. In the end the death toll was lower than most had expected. The total increased mortality rate was about 4,4% compared to what would be statistically expected, and for some reason lower than most comparable European nations.
But reading online, notably on here, I see plenty of posts and comments about people that socially/mentally never recovered, e.g they stopped going to restaurants and never started again, stopped meeting friends or going to hobby groups, they fell out of the habits and never got back in once restrictions were removed. So many people talk about being lonely and depressed since the pandemic because they still live as if they were in it.
On the other hand, I also know that unhappy people seeking support are more likely to post about their life online.
