Was it right for Rick's group to overtake leadership in Alexandria?

Recently got to the Alexandria "arc" in TWD, and I've been wondering whether or not it was right for Rick and the rest to take charge so suddenly because of how many people started dying once they initially got there. I'm curious to see other opinions, genuine question.
