EMDR changed my life

Sharing a Win!

Hi, I would like to share my journey through OCD and how I regained my life through this technique. From a certain point in my life my obsessive thoughts started escalating. I came to learn what it was and that it wasn't normal later in life. I've always had this tendency to obssess over things since an early age. I had obsessive thoughts about God due to religious upbringing, thought I was always sinning and had to ask for forgivness (ritual) and other similar behaviors. But when I reched around 26 it escalated in a way I never imagined before and I learned about this condition. My mind started mixing thoughts to sabotage me turning good things to impure by obsession. I did therapy for some time and it did help but didn't seem to get to the bottom of the issue.

One day randomly I learned about this technique called EMDR, for those of you who don't know it is a treatment created to help people with PTSD to desensitize them from past trauma using rapid eye movement technique conducted by a professional. I was curious about it and decided to give it a shot. I had major trauma that once was quite repressed but now my mind kept bringing up in an obsessive way turning my days really hard to go through.

I started with a 3 sessions package with a professional, and decided to go all in, even though I was quite afraid of what could happen. The sessions are really intense I'm not gonna lie. You literally have to go back to the moment of trauma, relive it and let the brain process the information. You normally don't want to do that. It's normal for the brain to avoid what it considers painful. But at that point I've made up my mind to go all the way and I'm glad I did it. Just after the first session it was like the whole world changed for me... it was lke I was seeing the world through a particular pair of goggles, and suddenly they were removed from me, making me forget why I saw the world in a certain way. It's hard to explain, it is a bit different from your normal catharsis where you cry and so on, while in therapy. It was like a heavy amount of emotional repression was lifted from me, and all this with one session only! I was amazed.

I kept doing it and when I noticed I was on my tenth session. I was sort of addicted to healing trauma. The obsessive thoughts calmed down in a big way. Certain obsessive thoughts that were dealt with in the sessions, weren't coming up anymore, like they lost all their energy. I still do it to this day but way less frequently. I started doing it by myself at home, but I don't recommend doing it by yourself at first, or ever depending on your case. I just felt that after doing it with a professional I got the grasp of it. When something really bothers me in an obsessive way, I do a session on the subject. Nowadays I use EMDR guided videos, but the professional help I got first was invaluable.

Just wanted to share my experience with all of you. I'm happy to say my mental condition improved immensely. If I had to put in numbers I'd say around 60% improvement. There is still a lot I need to work on my self and this technique will never leave my side now.

If you've read this far, thank you for your attention. I wish all the best for all of you. Feel free to ask me anything you want.
