Looking/hoping for advice :)
I’ve been thinking about getting a tarantula (Brachypelma hamorii) and still gathering information but from what I’ve found, not all information is corresponding to what I’ve read here so far (mainly in regard to enclosures)
I know I need an enclosure with enough space for them to dig a burrow and I want it be mostly in-escape-able (as far as possible) since I do have two dogs that are sometimes home alone
My research so far still left me with some questions and I hope you could help with them:
- Does it need cross-ventilation? I saw a few enclosure with ventilation holes, but a lot of them are near the bottom, where the substrate should be
- which size would be necessary/ideal for an adult or sub-adult? I read 30cmx30cmx30cm but most of those have ventilation near the bottom
- do I need a heat source? I know they should be on the wall so the spider can get away from it, and that tarantulas need it a bit warmer
They would be in my room since my partner is not really a fan. It’s not cold in there but not too warm either, especially at night
- I know a hydrometer is useful but do I need to keep it humid regularly or would overflowing the water bowl be enough?
- how do I go about storing their food? I know they don’t feed that often, so is it possible to just buy one or two say worms at the same time? (I really have no idea what the “packing sizes” are
I’m definitely going to see a tarantula in person before I get one (at an expo for instance) since I’ve never seen one before and are a bit hesitant if I would be uncomfortable handling them if necessary (eg for adjusting something in the enclosure)
I’m sorry for any weird wording, I’m not a native speaker 😅
