Graduate school and new job… what should I do?
I applied for both a graduate (out of state) program and new jobs in December 2025, hoping that the best-case scenario would be that I could work for one year before starting the program in January 2027. There was a good chance that I was not going to get into grad school the first time applying, so I didn’t let it stop me from applying to jobs. By the time the application and interview process was coming to an end, I received a job offer just weeks before being accepted into the graduate program. This seems like amazing news! And it is! However, I will be working my new job for only 8 months total, 3 of which will be training. I do not want to burn the bridge with the company because I would like to return after graduation, but not in the same department. I cannot decide if I should tell my new boss that I’ve been accepted or not, because they could still rescind the job offer at this point and I would have to probably work as a server or something until I leave for school. I would be getting a decent pay increase with the new position(really could use the money for school) and my replacement has been hired for my current department. I want to be open and honest if I can, but will be devastated if they decide to rescind the offer. Not sure if it matters, but I work in healthcare. I know that either way I will end up telling them, I just don’t know when the best time is. Thank you in advance for your responses!
