Deep OTM options on crypto: win rate 3.6%, expected ROI +81.8% per trade. Here's the math and the backtest.
Most people approach options trying to predict direction. I stopped doing that. Here's a different framework that actually makes mathematical sense.
The core idea
Deep out-of-the-money options during extreme fear events are systematically mispriced.
When the market is in panic, implied volatility gets compressed on the upside — everyone expects continued decline, so OTM calls are cheap. Very cheap. But crypto markets have a structural tendency toward violent reversals after extreme liquidation events.
The trade: buy deep OTM calls when three conditions align simultaneously:
- Fear & Greed index below 25 (extreme fear)
- Liquidations above $50M (large forced selling)
- Technical confirmation (price above MA200)
The backtest: 400 days of data
Triggers: 28 times Wins: 2 Losses: 26 (premium went to zero) Highest single return: +4,991% Average ROI per trigger: +81.8%
Win rate: 3.6% Expected value: positive
Why the math works
Each trade risks a fixed premium — $20-50 for a deep OTM contract. Maximum loss is that premium. No stop-loss needed because loss is already defined.
When it wins, it wins large. The two winning trades in 400 days were enough to more than cover all 26 losses and produce a positive expected return.
This is the same logic as buying insurance in reverse. You're the one selling protection against a scenario everyone else thinks is impossible. When the scenario happens, the payoff is asymmetric.
The hard part
The math is straightforward. The psychology isn't.
After losing the premium 10 times in a row, most people stop. The system hasn't stopped working — the expected value is still positive — but human loss aversion overrides the math.
This is exactly why it needs to be systematic. A rule that fires when all three conditions are met, executes automatically, and doesn't ask for emotional input.
What I built
A signal scanner that runs daily at 08:30 UTC:
- Pulls Fear & Greed index
- Checks liquidation data from Bybit + Binance
- Runs technical filter
- If all conditions met: selects the contract, sizes the position, places the order, sends an alert
No human decision required at execution time. The judgment was made when building the system.
Currently live alongside a 5-symbol futures quant system.
Questions on signal design, contract selection, or position sizing — happy to go deeper.
