Is 30/mg temazepam that concerning?
27F, 5’7 and ~150lb, been on zoloft for 12 years, started wellbutrin about 5 years ago, and incassia for 2 years, don’t smoke, rarely drink.
I’m a pretty healthy adult with no current medical issues aside from OCD and anxiety that have been well under control with my medications, however my main side effect is terrible insomnia. Melatonin never worked for me and OTC antihistamines always give me terrible side effects and never gave me any restful sleep. So about 4 years ago I was prescribed 15/mg of temazepam to use when I really need it. It always helped with onset insomnia but I would still struggle with maintenance insomnia, however I never suffered with terrible side effects or “hangover” feelings like everything else I had tried.
About two years later, my PCP decided to up me to 22.5/mg since I seemed to be tolerating the 15/mg fine and wanted to see if that would help with my maintenance insomnia which has been great for the last 2 years. My problem however is I don’t have insurance and for whatever reason the 22.5/mg capsules are anywhere from $60-80 for 30 capsules while the 15/mg + 30/mg capsules are no more than $15 for the same amount, despite being the same exact form. I normally wouldn’t care much but I’ve recently been let go and can’t justify that price over a 7.5/mg difference.
I had recently asked my PCP if it would be okay if I could go to 30mg instead since I’ve been really successful with the 22.5mg capsules, and she understandably got concerned. I understand benzos are rough and scary but she knows I take them AT MOST twice a week and she can even see in my charts that each refill will last me a few months, and any time I start feeling like I’m building up a tolerance I won’t refill my prescriptions for at least 6 months. I COMPLETELY understand her concern but I’m terrified of alternatives like ambien (someone close to me was addicted and super destructive on them), I hate how antihistamines make me feel, and more natural solutions have never helped me much. I’ve had sleeping issues all my life but it’s just been exasperated by my antidepressants.
Anyway, I would love to hear some other professional opinions on if a 7.5/mg increase is that much of a concern for a drug I’ve been handling very well and responsibly for the last 4 years.
