How do I be obedient of His Word?

I hurt someone who I saw as my friend. I am trying to understand verses like Matthew 5:23-26, John 15:13, and Matthew 18:21-22. And whether my heart is being like a stone and making me feel cold towards him and not see him as a friend anymore. Because I feel like I have avoided being honest to him that I feel this way and have been half hearted whenever he has expressed how much pain my sinful ways have hurt him. I also don't know if "paying every last penny" can mean doing a sin he is asking me to do because that action will help him aleviate some of that pain. But more so, I feel that if I were to tell him I do not want to do it because it is a sin, that it would not demonstrate God's love or that I am using His Word to avoid taking accountability for the hurt I committed against him.
