I manage a live crypto quant system entirely from my phone. Here's how the toolstack evolved over 2 months — and what actually matters.
When I started building a quant system two months ago, my first instinct was to buy a dedicated computer. Priced one out — several thousand dollars. Hesitated.
Then I realized the system should run on a cloud server, not a local machine. No downtime risk, no network dependency on my home connection. Google Cloud basic tier: $8-30/month. Problem solved before it became a problem.
What followed was three distinct phases of how I actually interact with the system.
Phase 1: Laptop + SSH
Connected to the Google Cloud server via SSH from my laptop. Open terminal, type commands, review logs, push code changes.
Worked fine. But tied to a desk. Every time something needed attention, I needed the laptop open.
This lasted about a month.
Phase 2: Mobile SSH via Termius
Found Termius — a proper SSH client for mobile. Around $15/month.
Suddenly I could check logs, run commands, and push fixes from anywhere. Waiting in line, commuting, middle of the night when an alert fired.
Same underlying access. Dramatically different convenience.
Phase 3: AI agent layer via OpenClaw
This changed the nature of the interaction entirely.
OpenClaw connects Claude (the AI model) to real tools: file system, terminal, SSH, APIs. Instead of writing commands, I describe what I want. The system figures out the implementation.
Connected it to Lark (enterprise messaging). Now the interface is just conversation.
"Check today's logs for all 5 symbols." "The SOL position closed — why?" "There's an API error on BTC — find the cause."
OpenClaw reads the logs, traces the issue, explains what happened, and proposes a fix. I approve. It implements.
I rarely open Termius anymore.
What this evolution actually means
The barrier to running a systematic trading operation has dropped significantly.
You don't need a dedicated machine. You don't need to be at a desk. You don't need to write every command manually.
What you do need:
- A clear strategy (AI can help implement, not replace this)
- Discipline to follow the system when it's losing
- Willingness to debug and iterate when things break
The tools handle execution. Judgment is still yours.
Current setup cost
- Google Cloud server: ~$15/month
- Termius: ~$15/month
- OpenClaw + Claude: varies by usage
- Bybit API: free
Total infrastructure: under $50/month for a fully automated 5-symbol live trading system.
