What Does Apple Maps Need to Be Perfect? (My Suggested Changes)
A few weeks ago, I posted here asking whether it was worth switching to Apple Maps. As a user of the Apple ecosystem, I feel that the smoothness and integration with my devices are superior, but I’m still wrestling with the decision of whether to stick with Google or take the plunge (I’ve already ruled out Waze).
For me, Apple Maps is just one step away from perfection, and it has to do with the density of information. Here’s my proposal to improve the app:
- A powerful, native review system
Apple needs to stop relying on third-party services like Yelp or TripAdvisor. My idea is for them to implement their own robust system. This isn’t impossible to do, nor is it uncharted territory for them; Apple already successfully manages its own review system on Apple Podcasts and in the App Store without relying on anyone else. If they can create a community that rates content and apps natively, they should replicate that model in Maps so that the experience is 100% Apple and not a mix of external services.
- Strategic partnership with Google (via Apple Intelligence)
If Apple Intelligence is going to integrate tools like Gemini or ChatGPT while maintaining privacy, why not negotiate with Google to display its reviews within Apple Maps? This would instantly solve the problem of outdated hours and the lack of photos of places—areas where Google still has the edge.
What do you think?
