23M – Persistent Early Awakening (5 hours max sleep) for 25 days after breakup – Should I see my GP about medication?
23M – Persistent Early Awakening (5 hours max sleep) for 25 days after breakup – Should I see my GP about medication?
Age/Sex: 23M
Height/Weight: 170 cm, 85 kg
Location: Slovenia (Central Europe)
Medications: None
Substances: Occasional alcohol (socially), occasional smoking when out with friends, no drugs
Medical history: No known chronic conditions
Main issue:
For the past ~25 days, ever since a traumatic breakup (I was planning to propose), I’ve been consistently waking up about 5 hours after falling asleep and cannot fall back asleep.
It does not matter what time I go to bed — I always wake up around the 5-hour mark, fully alert. When I wake up, I often feel emotionally overwhelmed and sometimes start crying. I just lie there unable to return to sleep.
In these 25 days, I’ve only managed one short afternoon nap.
Additional symptoms:
-
Evening headaches (wondering if this could be from sleep deprivation?)
-
Emotional distress related to the breakup
-
Daytime functioning is starting to be affected due to cumulative sleep loss
What I’ve tried:
Hiking and physical activity
Spending time with friends
Sleeping at a friend’s place
Two psychiatrist visits (she said getting 5 hours in this situation is “a win”)
Drinking alcohol to try to sleep (this actually made sleep worse)
None of these have improved the early awakening.
My question:
At what point should I consult my personal physician about short-term sleep medication? Is 5 hours per night for nearly a month something that warrants medical intervention, or is this still within a “normal” stress response window after a traumatic emotional event?
I’m mainly concerned because the sleep deprivation is starting to impact my daily life.
