Drinking vs eating disorder

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post, but this sub has been my biggest support getting through sobriety.

I have had an eating disorder since I was 12, I’m 38 and it’s been on and off through my life. It got really bad about 10 years ago, was in an inpatient facility, had a psychiatrist for 4 years to support me etc. it never fully went away, but I’ve learned techniques to help me and to work through manic episodes of wanting to purge.

Since I’ve stopped drinking, my disorder has spiralled out of control, like never before. I feel so powerless and my techniques are failing every time. Since giving up alcohol, which contented me and calmed me in the evening, I have nothing to take the focus off the mania that sets in, I hadn’t even realised I was essentially using alcohol as medication for my disorder.

I’ve self referred back to the psychiatrist and will be meeting her the week after next, so I’m actively seeking help with it, I can’t do it on my own.

I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this, or an exacerbation in unhealthy behaviours when giving up alcohol?

Not drinking is taking up so much of my energy and brain power, it’s the biggest struggle to then try and tackle an eating disorder, it feels like I haven’t got enough fight in me to also focus on that. Regardless, I’m grateful to no longer be drinking.
